Move over Netflix. If you want to watch a movie on your computer right away, all you need is a library card.
The Vancouver Public Library is offering a new online movie streaming service featuring films from the Criterion Collection — and it's free.
"Some movies are classics, well-known and familiar. And then there are the eclectic ones that are unknowns," said Sandra Singh, Vancouver's chief librarian.
The streaming service offers hundreds of titles, and more are on the way. Some of the collection includes:
  • Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal
  • Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times
  • Paul Bartel's Eating Raoul
  • Wim Wenders' Paris, Texas
  • Alain Resnais' Night and Fog
"It really is bringing to viewers some of the classic movies that had been really popular in our DVD collection," said Singh.
She said streaming will likely replace the library's DVD collection, just as VHS tapes once gave way to DVDs.
"A lot of the market forecasters suggest that DVDs have another five year life to them," she said.
But, she said, the library is no hurry to go all digital — it kept its VHS tapes for years after those DVDs came along.
